John McCoy and Wife Were Both Born in Ireland
Just half a century ago today in Chicago, John McCoy, a soldier boy, who had returned home from service in the Civil war, was married to Anna Belle Coyle. Today the quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in this city, 120 Logan avenue. Mr. McCoy is 81 years of age and Mrs. McCoy is 76. Both were born in Ireland, the former in Armagh county and the latter in Monohon county.
When only 8 years of age, Anna Coyle came to this country with her parents. Mr. McCoy was 21 years old when he first saw America. Both families later drifted west and finally settled in Chicago. When the Civil war broke out, John McCoy enlisted and was one of General Mulligan's famous Irish brigade. He was wounded at the battle of Lexington in September, 1861, captured, and later exchanged. Then he spent three months in a St. Louis hospital, recovering from his injuries. Later he re-enlisted and served until February of 1864.
Returning to Chicago, he and his sweetheart were married in less than three months. Mr. McCoy was an Illinois Central machinist, but the young couple decided to try their fortunes in the west and removed to Butler county, Iowa, in 1865. They located on a farm, where they resided until four years ago, when they came to this city. Mr,. McCoy has been retired from active affairs for 20 years, but both he and his wife are in good health for their years.
Seven children were born of their union, but only five of them survive. They are E. H. McCoy and Mrs. Charles Marlow of this city. J. J. McCoy of Tracy, Minn.; L. F. McCoy, of Spokane, Wash., and the other is a sister of charity at Dubuque. Two years ago a son, Robert H., was drowned at lake Ninigon, Ontario, and the memory of his recent death cast somewhat of a shadow upon the quiet affair here today.
